Why is it that most people who want to learn guitar, always seem to have a bit of trouble with chords? Well, they’re fairly complicated at first. You have to manipulate your fingers at the right time and in the right place or it just sounds yucky and goofy. So, Guitar instructions has decided that today and throughout the following week, will be about learning guitar chords. We’re gonna offer a bit of our advice, review a few guitar chords books/dvds and then we’re gonna point you in the right direction for some fun resources to help you in learning guitar chords.

What exactly is a chord, first of all?

There are over two thousand chords in existence. That’s a lot of chords, huh! You’re probably thinking, “how the heck can I learn all of those chords?” and the truth is, you don’t have to. There are around 100-200 chords that are the most popular, the rest you will rarely, if ever, hear in music these days. And out of those few hundred guitar chords,  you will probably hear 20 or so predominately. That makes things a lot easier when you’re learning guitar chords, doesn’t it?

So, in our previous post about learning guitar scales, we reviewed a book for you guys. It’s called Fretboard theory, and it has all that you will need to get a general knowledge of scales, chords, and intervals.

Once again, we highly recommend you check out fretboard theory. Learning guitar chords will be so much easier for you. Not only will you be able to learn virtually every guitar chord that’s out there, but you’ll basically be getting all the music theory mumbo jumbo that confuses everyone, and you’ll be able to understand it as if it’s being taught to a kid!

What is a scale? A scale is a group of notes that are played in a particular order that are known to sound good. You can re-arrange and play the notes how you please in several cases, but when first learning guitar scales, you should stick to what you’re taught.

So, what all does this fabulous book have to offer? It comes with the chords to EVERY song by the Beatles, and comes with not only the chords to all 194 Beatles songs, but also the lyrics of them. This is very amazing, and key to actually learning a song. When we want to learn a song, we also want to learn the LYRICS to the songs. Finally a publisher realizes this.

Also coming with this book are the strumming patterns from the actual recordings of The Beatles, in the original keys. Each song comes with the chord symbols, all the guitar chord boxes, and even complete lyrics. A fun and helpful playing guide and full discography of The Beatles songs also come with this book. Very nice!

If you’re used to getting The Beatles chords from the internet, save yourself a lot of time, effort, and printing and get the book. The guitar chords instruction alone is well worth it, especially in such an organized manner. All that could be added to make this book freaking perfect, would be the signature licks or intros from The Beatles, or the signature intros. Often, however, you can work them out from the intro chords given.

First one being that you and your child remember, that guitar instructions for kids work similarly to that for adults. It requires persistance and a love of music. For kids, this is somewhat hard, as there are so many things to distract them for one reason or another, or they get bored very easily and go do something else.

You have to have something that makes it FUN for kids to want to learn. At least, that’s how it was for me when I was a kid. I bet your’s isn’t too much different. So, while you’ve got guitar instructions for kids that are great, if they’re also not fun(which, sometimes, guitar instructions might not be…), it’s still going to be a challenge.

So how do you make learning guitar fun? Simple!

You may it like a game. Make it like a contest. If there’s even the tiniest bit of challenge to it, a child can’t help but be fascinated by whatever he or she is doing. How DARE you say he can’t do 30+ chord changes in a minute? What do you mean you don’t think he can learn Hero of War by Rise Against? You’re insane!

Little things like that can make guitar instructions for kids fun.

Now that we’ve got that covered, it’s time to make sure we’ve got some good lessons in the first place!

Personally, these guitar instructions for kids happen to be my favorite(and my son’s favorite!). I actually bought this for him for his birthday and he’s been perpetually entertained since. He’s also continually progressed since and I’m getting to be very impressed with what he’s able to do now. Heck, I’d say in a few years he  might even be better than me!
